New shop set up.

I changed the shop to accommodate the new larger miter saw.

 I updated pictures and the image map so you can click on various tools and get more information on them.

April 5th

Lots of tablesaw, mitersaw, and bandsaw cuts,
thickness sanding, disk sanding and glue.

February 16th
Ripped, sanded, crosscut and
re-stacked
February 17th
Glue and miter cuts today
Feature ring is complete
March 8th
Added 75 pieces this weekend
March 9th
Started to turn the base
March 22nd
Added 5 more rings and started shaping

March 23rd
Added the last 81 pieces and began final shaping
April 4th
Applied finish.
You can see the feature ring looks a little different. I had to remake it because I did not leave enough wall thickness.

Chance of a life time

I spent the day with Sam Maloof.
Through UCR extension, Sam Offers one day classes where you can tour his shop and learn his processes.  We toured his shop, the original house that is now a California state historical building, and  his loaded wood sheds.
 The day ended with Sam and Beverly inviting us to their beautiful private residence.
A very special thank you for a very special day!

Lots of cutting and sanding for eight hours.
The end result is 16 diamonds made of bloodwood, green diamondwood, and maple.

Cut more segments, glue up and some time on the lathe. Now includes walnut, and curly maple.

A segmented turners dream tool. Quickly sands glued up rings, smooth and parallel.
does a nice job on thin veneer layers as well.

  New machine in the house.
Powermatic 3520B

Gave it a test drive today.
Here is a walnut bowl cut from a small section of crotch wood.
It will be stored for a couple months until it dries a little more. Then it will be final turned and polished.

   I have been awarded " Favorite Tip" in the Tips&Tricks section of the January 2006 issue of Woodcraft Magazine.

  The Tip was on how to safely resaw veneer layers from thicker stock.
